Martial Sport

A martial sport focuses training to win at tournaments and stresses techniques that will give you "points" in a sparring match. There is usually little emphasis on the mental aspects of martial training. Winning at a sport appeals to the student's ego, and the majority of schools teach this way because it maintains a large student base.

What a true martial art offers is the combination of practical techniques and mental aspects within the warrior mentality. Instead of focusing on “winning the game”, it prepares the student for realistic attacks that one may encounter, as well as the sense of awareness to avoid dangerous situations before they fully materialize.

The techniques of a martial sport may not work in a real situation, especially under stress. True martial arts provide practical techniques that are fairly simple, yet proven effective. Students train under small amounts of stress to become better prepared for an actual situation.

Beware, there are many schools that will claim to be a true martial art, but do not have the proper combination of techniques to adequately prepare the student for a real life situation. A good school will be able to discuss how the techniques fit into the overall plan of self defense and cultivation of self awareness.
